Troy, N.Y.: Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County’s innovative literacy and mentoring program for children, Everybody WINS! Power Lunch, has received a $900 grant from First Niagara. This funding will allow children in area schools to be paired with volunteer reading mentors during the 2015-2016 school year.

Everybody WINS! Power Lunch increases children’s chances for success in school and in life. The aim of the program is to increase children’s interest in books and their prospects for school success through reading experiences with caring adults. The Power Lunch program pairs elementary school children one-to-one with volunteer mentors from local businesses, colleges and the community to read aloud once a week during lunchtime. Everybody WINS! mentors meet with students at School 14 and Sacred Heart School in Troy, Arbor Hill Elementary and Sheridan Preparatory Academy in Albany, A. Lansing Elementary School in Cohoes, and Bell Top Elementary School in East Greenbush.

Our volunteer mentors represent a variety of businesses and educational institutions including First Niagara, Comfortex, Pitney Bowes, the RPI Men’s Lacrosse Team, Aflac New York, HVCC, Sage Colleges, Key Bank, Canon, Phoenix Insurance, SEFCU, and Teal, Becker & Chiaramonte as well as many individual community members.
