Literacy Run / Walk 2008

5K Start Kids at the LitRun

TROY — More than 600 runners of all ages and all skill levels raced through the downtown streets Sunday morning as part of the annual Literacy Run/Walk event, which also drew crowds of supporters.

The event, organized by Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, featured a Children’s Fun Run, where children 8 and younger could showcase their running talent as well as a One-Mile Youth Run, which allowed participants 14 and younger to run like the wind. The event’s largest race, however, was the open 5K Run/Walk that began and ended at City Hall, attracting more than 400 walkers and runners of all ages.

English Language Civics (EL Civics)
Adults who want to improve their English while gaining an understanding of American life can find what they need at our free English Language Civics classes. Using group instruction based on real life situations, EL Civics gives recent immigrants and foreign-born residents an opportunity to discuss relevant issues, including family, the educational system, health and safety, American culture, and U.S. government. Each lesson is designed to move the class toward the target language, English.

The Hispanic population in the greater Capital Region has grown by more than 14 percent since 2000. Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County and Literacy Volunteers Mohawk-Hudson are working together to meet the needs of this segment of our community by offering classroom-model instruction to Spanish speakers in Troy and Rensselaer.

Spanish-speakers are not the only group involved in EL Civics in Rensselaer. Burmese immigrants make up a large percentage of Rensselaer's immigrant population. Volunteer instructors Pat Kenyon and Sue Hurd lead classes for Burmese students-one that meets at Rensselaer City Hall and one that meets at the Rensselaer Public Library.

Meanwhile, at the Comfortex plant in Maplewood, employees of diverse nationalities meet twice a week, improving their ability to function in the workplace. Volunteer instructor Carol Miller works with beginning-level learners, and staff member Linda Feldmann conducts sessions for the intermediate students.

For more information on this program, email: Linda Feldmann or call 274-8526.

Ready, Get Set, Go…Online
Thanks to a grant from the Bender Foundation, our resource collection is slowly being compiled on the Capital District Library Council's web site. Our collection is just one of many that are available to you from around the region. Go to www.cdlc.org and click on the CaDiLac Online button at the top of the left-hand column. This will lead you to a page where can insert a request by title, author, subject or ISBN number. If you have any trouble, please call 274-8526 and ask for Jeanne.

In the meantime, any book from our resource center can be sent to you by way of your library through the interlibrary loan system. Requested materials will be placed in an envelope addressed to your library, with your name and telephone number, and delivered to your library in one to two days. Inquiries can be made at the library's information desk.

When you return materials, simply put them in an envelope and write Troy Library, Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, and 274-8526 on the outside. Take the envelope to your library and then call us so we know to pick it up.
