Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County provides a variety of free programs and services. Not all of the programs and services listed here are available at all times. Please contact us for information as specified. Prospective volunteers are asked to attend an Orientation Session which will provide an overview of LVORC operations and answer questions regarding how you can help.  Orientation Schedule

Tutor Training Classes
A 21-hour training prepares volunteers to become Basic Literacy and ESOL tutors. Classes are held on evenings and weekdays. A current schedule is on the web site: www.lvorc.org or call Literacy Volunteers at 274-8526.

Tutors
Volunteer tutors help adult learners to acquire the skills they need to improve their quality of life. After completing 21 hours of training, tutors provide free one-to-one or small group tutoring in Basic Literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Tutors provide 2 hours of instruction a week for one year. Become a partner in building a literate community! If you would like to become a tutor, or if you need a tutor, please contact Literacy Volunteers: 274-8526, or e-mail lvorc@nycap.rr.com

Small Group Instruction
Small group tutoring makes it possible for several students to receive instruction together in either Basic Literacy or ESOL. If you are interested in leading or joining a small group, please contact Literacy Volunteers at 274-8526.

Read With Me
Literacy Volunteers pairs volunteer readers (Reading Buddies) with students in grades K-6 at Schools 12 and 14 in Troy to read together for 30 minutes each week. The Read With Me program is designed to encourage a love for books and to increase students' reading skills by providing them with good reading role models. Volunteers attend a 1½ - 2 hour training prior to starting the program.

English Language Civics
EL Civics is a fun and effective way for recent immigrants and foreign-born residents to improve their English skills while learning about life in America. Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County is collaborating with Literacy Volunteers Mohawk/Hudson to present classroom-model instruction in EL Civics to groups of adults in Rensselaer and Albany Counties.

Family to Family
The Family to Family program brings together families who speak English with families who are learning to speak English. Family to Family promotes family literacy and cultural exchange. Participate in family-oriented activities, make new friends, and learn a lot in the process. Contact Literacy Volunteers at 274-8526 or e-mail FamilytoFamily@aol.com.

Financial Literacy
The Financial Literacy program is being developed with Capital Communications Federal Credit Union. Students participate in 4 sessions of instruction to improve their money management skills.

Telephone Conversation Partners
Telephone Conversation Partners allows volunteers to use the telephone to practice English with intermediate level ESOL students. Volunteers attend a 90-minute training session where they are provided with dialogue scripts. Once they have been paired, telephone partners set up their own schedule of weekly 30-minute sessions. Call 274-8526 for more information.

Readers to Adults in Adult Home Setting
Volunteers select short, light reading material (short stories, current events, poems) to take to an area adult home to read to the residents. Following the reading, the tutor can lead residents in an informal discussion of the material. Each volunteer will have a chance to accompany a "veteran" reader before beginning to work alone.
