Introduction

Volunteers can help in many ways.. there is always a need for tutors.. but there are also opportunities to provide other types of assistance to the Literacy Volunteers organization, for example, as office workers, event workers and coordinators, computer and administrative help, etc.

Part-time, full-time, any-time..if you have the interest we have a need and can use your help!

Volunteer Orientation Sessions
Potential tutor volunteers are asked to attend an Orientation Session which will provide you with an overview of Literacy Volunteers operations and answer any questions you may have regarding how you can help (Attendance at Orientation Sessions is not necessary for non-tutor short-term, sporadic volunteers such as Event Workers, Event Committee Workers, etc.) Orientation Sessions are scheduled at libraries (and some other locations) throughout Rensselaer County and are usually less than an hour in length.   Orientation Schedule

Tutor Training Workshops
A 21-hour, 7-session combined training prepares volunteers to provide free tutoring in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Participants learn how to tutor adults using an interactive, learner-centered, whole language approach. After 6 sessions, tutors are paired with students to begin providing 2 hours of one-to-one or small group instruction per week for a minimum of one year. After 7 sessions, volunteers receive certification from LVORC. Become a partner in building a literate community!
