Exciting news! Beginning this Fall we will be serving adult learners in Schenectady County. According to Nancy Benz, Executive Director, “After receiving numerous phone calls from individuals and Schenectady based organizations seeking help for adults in need of English instruction, we knew it was time to start providing services in the Schenectady community.”

With support from a grant through the Schenectady Foundation, we will hire two part time support staff to help expand our program. One of the new staff members will assist in recruiting and training volunteer tutors as well as providing intake and assessments for adult learners. A second hire will be for a Fund Development Assistant who will help support our fundraising efforts.

A second grant from the Social Justice Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady will support activities that will help to bring about systemic change. Literacy, as a tool for empowerment, can enable individuals to engage meaningfully in their communities, advocate for themselves and others, and access opportunities for personal and professional advancement.
