Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County has a rewarding volunteer opportunity for the 2019-2020 school year which might be right for you. Do you enjoy reading? Would you like to share your enjoyment of reading with a child and support his or her reading development? Do you have an hour a week to spare? If so, consider joining the Everybody WINS! Power Lunch program as a School Coordinator or Reading Mentor.

Everybody Wins! Power Lunch is an innovative reading and mentoring program that improves children’s prospects for success in school and in life. Power Lunch pairs elementary school children, one-to-one, with volunteers from nearby businesses, colleges and the community. Once a week, reading partners enjoy conversation together at the school, and the adult reads a book aloud to the child while he/she eats lunch.

The Everybody WINS! Power Lunch program is in need of volunteer reading mentors at various schools for the 2019-2020 school year. Mentors meet with students during lunch at School 2, School 14, Carroll Hill, Bell Top and Unity Sunshine in Troy, Abram Lansing Elementary in Cohoes and Arbor Hill Elementary in Albany.

A volunteer School Coordinator is needed for the program at Abram Lansing in Cohoes on Fridays and for the program at Arbor Hill School in Albany on Thursdays. The volunteer School Coordinator supervises the sessions at the school, selects books for the reading mentor and child, and makes sure the sessions run smoothly (approximately 2.5-3 hours per week).
The required one-hour training for the program will be held on Thursday, August 15th and repeated on Thursday August 29th. Both are scheduled for 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the LVORC offices at 71 First Street, Troy. Please phone (518) 244-4650 or email litvoldirector@aol.com if you are interested in attending the training and/or would like more information.
