Welcome to Literacy Volunteers!

Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County plays an important role in our community by offering English, math, financial, and computer literacy instruction to approximately 200 adult learners each year. Through a cadre of trained volunteer tutors, we provide one-to-one and small group tutoring to Capital Region residents with low literacy levels – including English language learners (non-native speakers). Our confidential services are provided free of charge to students. Costs are covered through government grants, and generous donations from foundations, businesses, and individuals.

We strive to ensure that adult learners who need literacy services have access to well-organized and high quality literacy and English language instruction.

Please join in our excitement with the launch of our new and improved website! This site is dedicated to our tutors, students, and the community at large. You’ll find information about Literacy Volunteers, our students, and tutors. There’s also a page with community resources that’s available to anyone looking for help finding employment, housing, health care, legal services, and more. An added feature is “Google Translate” at the top of the page to assist with translation in 133 languages. We hope you enjoy perusing our site and welcome your suggestions!

Special thanks to the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation for their generous donation that enabled us to create this website.
